REPUBLIC ACT 8485, the Animal Welfare Act of 1998

Republic Act 8485, more commonly known as "The Animal Welfare Act of 1998", aims to protect and promote the welfare of all animals in the Philippines. The Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Animal Industry (DA-BAI) is the implementing agency with it the director as the head of animal welfare. There is also a DA-Committee of Animal Welfare (CAW) that creates rules and regulations supporting the law. Members of DA-CAW include representatives of government agencies, veterinary and non-government (NGO) organizations. The Act covers responsibilities of property owners, maintenance, ownership, trade, slaughter, euthanasia, transport and handling of animals, for both government and private establishments and facilities.
